Ahh, Black Friday is upon us. The proverbial “Spend All Your Money on Crap You Don’t Need Shopping Weekend” has arrived. While Black Friday is huge for retailers, it sparks much controversy from financial experts and skeptics. Least I not mention, several groups are asking that we boycott mainstream retail Black Friday 2014 due to the Mike Brown situation. Whatever side of the fence you are on, you must admit that Black Friday has some major perks ESPECIALLY if you look at it from an entrepreneurial standpoint. This Black Friday, I urge you to take a walk on the non-retail side, the digital side of Black Friday.
3 Black Friday Shopping Tips for Entrepreneurs
Stop Dragging Your Feet & Get A New Website. If you are in business then you definitely need to have an online presence. Without a great online presence, you are leaving money on the table. I’m not talking about getting a free website either. Ronnie Tyler, Co-Founder of the popular website, Black & Married with Kids, once said “You Can’t Build an Empire with Free Stuff”. That statement is SO true, especially when it comes to your website. You should own the domain name of your choice and pay for your own web hosting. Don’t risk your business using a free hosting solution (please tell me you aren’t using a Weebly or mywebsitename.wordpress.com site).
Blue Host is my web hosting solution of choice. They have one of the simplest WordPress installations in the market and the quality of their customer service is impeccable. Blue Host is running dynamite sale all weekend into Cyber Monday, with rates as low as $3.97 per month for hosting. Seriously, you can’t beat that price with a bat.
In case I haven’t sold you on Blue Host, another great web hosting company is Host Gator. Host Gator is a very popular web host provider and their Black Friday rates are crazy good. If you can’t afford a web designer at the moment, never fear! You can get a very professional and affordable predesigned theme from somewhere like Studio Press or ThemeForest. Tell me again, what’s your excuse for not getting your website going?
Equip your Toolbox with Some Bad Ass Widgets
One of my favorite sites is AppSumo. Not only do they give you high value content in regards to growing your email list (critical for online business), but the guys at AppSumo run the BEST specials and discounts on list building and social media engagement software utilities from app providers all over the web. Not only does AppSumo provide their audience with the best discounts, but they give away so much FREE stuff. For instance, they have partnered with a vendor who is giving away a package of 101 free royalty free stock photo graphics for Black Friday. Can we say… SWEET!?! If you are not on App Sumo’s mailing list, go sign up so that you can benefit from their goodies.
Sharpen the Iron by Learning a New Skill
We all have aspects of business that we could improve upon. Black Friday is the perfect shopping event to strengthen your Achilles Heel. Whether you want to sharpen your graphic design skills, want to learn how to create sales copy, learn about using effective Facebook ads, or even how to create your own podcast (shameless plug). You can gain much of the knowledge that you need in order to break through your next level in business at a fraction of the normal cost. Many online instructors (me included) are running 50% off specials on their courses. Here are some great resources for online business education:
