Have you ever caught a glimpse of your future, yet didn’t realize it at the time? I’ll never forget the time I was on the phone with my entrepreneurial girlfriend Terri, catching up on what was new in each other’s lives, our business plans, and random pop culture tidbits. Upon the closing of our conversation, Terri let out an exasperated yet determined sigh, “Girl let me get out here and sell some a$$!”. I chuckled, in a very Diamond from the Player’s Club-esque moment I replied “Make the money girl, don’t let the money make you!”
Now before you get your panties in a bunch, Terri was figuratively speaking. A married mother and advanced degree counselor who had recently quit her stable job to pursue her entrepreneurial dreams, she had no earthly intentions on joining the sex trade. What Terri was alluding to was the realness of the full time entrepreneurial grind. One year later and an abrupt layoff, Terri’s word ring louder in my head now than ever before.
Selling A$$: Three hard truths about quitting or losing your job and becoming an entrepreneur
1. You’ll Need to Stop the Bleeding.
Whether you quit or lose your job, you’ll need a safety cushion. Some experts suggest having 6 months of expense money set aside; others say that having 3 months is sufficient. Radical Success Coach, Doreen Rainey suggests that when evaluating the pursuit of full time entrepreneurship, evaluate your finances and see if the facts line up. If your facts don’t line up, you’ll need to stop the bleeding. You’ll either need to get another job fast and with the quickness or begin generating revenue by selling a product or service.
2. Get Comfortable with Selling.
Doreen Rainey also states that in order to be an entrepreneur you need to get comfortable with pursuing and making sales. For many people this may feel like an awkward transition, particularly if you did not previously work in sales. Many of us were cloaked in the safety of corporate, government, or public service jobs that didn’t require us to sell anything. Pitch WHAT? Pitch to WHO? Yes Gurrl, receive this word. You need to begin selling and sell as if your life depends on it, because at this point…it DOES!
3. It’s Time Out for Playing Punk Ass.
For God did not give us a spirit of timidity” 2 Timothy 1:7.
Did I really just swear and spit out a scripture in the same breath? Yep and as the saints say, “God knows my heart”. It’s all done in love. I want to ensure that you receive this message down to the very depths of your soul. Know that as I minister to you, I minister to myself. Be BOLD! Stop playing small! Stop playing scared! You cannot thrive as an entrepreneur by being timid. If there was ever a time to believe in yourself, now is the time, trust me! Your creator (whomever you worship) made you in the spirit of greatness, able to achieve the desires of your heart. Stop watching celebrating the wins of others from the sidelines! It is time to get in the game and achieve some WINS/SALES of your own!
We are now experiencing the period of the millennium entrepreneurial boom. Following your dreams is deeply romanticized and rightfully so. There is something very fulfilling and surreal about operating within your gift and maintaining a living while doing so. BUT, let me tell you, it isn’t easy. If you quit or lose your job before you are financially ready, it can make the journey feel extremely difficult. Whatever you are faced with, don’t be afraid to pivot and change course when needed. Lastly, always remember that you are equipped to do exactly what you were put on this earth to do! Now go out there be bold, make Mama proud and sell your ass off! *winks*
